YouTube testing video downloads

YouTube said it is dabbling with letting people download videos to computers as an alternative to watching clips streamed over the Internet. Video owners would be able to offer downloads for free or for small fees paid through a Google Checkout service, according to YouTube product manager Thai Tran.

"Many video creators on YouTube want their work to be seen far and wide," Tran wrote in a YouTube blog post. "They don't mind sharing their work, provided that they get the proper credit." YouTube has been seeking ways to make money off videos shared at the popular website and address complaints from film and television studios worried that pirated material is swapped there.

"We've started working with a few partners who want their videos shared universally and even enjoyed away from an Internet connection," Tran wrote. Video copyright owners would be able to provide Creative Commons permits that license YouTube members to reuse content within specified limits. "We're also testing an option that gives video owners the ability to permit downloading of their videos from YouTube," Tran noted.

Lecture videos from classes at a set of US universities including Stanford and Duke are being offered as free downloads at YouTube as part of a test of the service. YouTube channels for Khan Academy, Household Hacker and Pogobat are also participating in the test of the potential "distribution and revenue-generating tool," according to Tran.

Full-length MGM films on YouTube

YouTube, the largest video-sharing website, will show full-length films from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's archives. The partnership is aimed boosting advertising revenue for both YouTube and the Hollywood studio. It will result in the launch of a video-on-demand channel called Impact, dedicated exclusively to action films, TV shows and clips.

"I think it will grow into a nice little business," said Jim Packer, co-president of MGM Worldwide Television. He told the BBC that YouTube made an ideal partner because of its 280 million monthly users. "I think YouTube has something that a lot of sites don't have. "They have a lot of people walking through their front door everyday. And if they are smart in how they grow this, YouTube should have a successful business also," said Mr Packer.

Another channel that has been unveiled will showcase episodes from the popular programme American Gladiators from the 1980s and 1990s. The videos will cost users nothing to download but will contain advertising. Initially they will only be available in the US. But there are plans to open the service elsewhere once rights issues have been cleared.

Google, which bought YouTube two years ago for $1.65bn, has been searching for ways to make money out of the site without driving away its huge fan base. The site has been facing competition from other video-sharing services such as Hulu, which offers programming from NBC Universal and News Corp's Fox as well as MGM.

Under an agreement YouTube has already signed with CBS, users can download classic TV shows such as Star Trek, MacGyver, and Beverly Hills 90210. It has other arrangements in place with companies like the BBC, Sony, Lionsgate and Oprah.

YouTube said that striking a deal with MGM made sense given its commitment to deliver premium content online. "YouTube is committed to helping our community of fans discover new content and reconnect with their all time favourite TV shows and movies," said Jordan Hoffner, director of content partnerships for the company.

"By partnering with MGM, YouTube is strengthening its position as an entertainment destination where Hollywood studios can reach a global audience."

YouTube Finally Figures Out How To Make Money: Big Ads On Its Homepage

Take a good, long look at YouTube's (GOOG) homepage. You may not recognize it soon: The video site is trying out new ad format that will turn over a good chunk of the page to sponsors.

The move is an obvious step that Google hasn't taken yet as it tries to wring money out of its hugely popular site. Messing around with pre-roll ads, overlays and other ways to insert advertising into the video is one thing. But simply handing over more of the homepage -- its most valuable real estate -- is a relatively easy way to generate dollars.

Advertising sources say YouTube is revamping the homepage to accommodate a huge new banner ad that will span the entire width of the page. The ad will is roughly the same height as the current video ad unit on the upper right of the page, and designed to accommodate high-definition video, similar to the campaign Sony Pictures ran on YouTube to market "Pineapple Express." Sources who have seen the unit describe it having multiple tabs that activate when rolled over by a cursor.

YouTube is shopping the unit to entertainment-industry advertisers, the ones that have most embraced the video site as a marketing tool. They're offering inaugural sponsors a deal to buy the new unit for roughly the same price as the old, or about $200,000 a day. The first is coming within the next two weeks, and advertisers expect YouTube to start bumping the rates up this fall.

Google has been criticized for leaving money on the table by keeping its search page free of advertising. Likewise, the YouTube homepage has until now had pretty minimal advertising, just the window in the upper right corner of the site. But it should be the easiest part of the site to sell, since YouTube has plenty of control of what appears there.

Industry observers think that News. Corp.'s MySpace is getting more than a $1 million for takeover ads on its homepage. One big difference: Unlike MySpace, many YouTube users never end up on the site's home page.

Asked for comment, YouTube offered the pro forma "We do not comment on rumors and speculation," response.

Italian Media Company Sues YouTube

Italian media conglomerate Mediaset Group has sued YouTube for €500 million (US$780 million), alleging the Google video-sharing site illegally hosts thousands of video clips that belong to Mediaset.

The suit, filed in civil court in Rome, names both YouTube and parent company Google. Mediaset operates television stations in Italy and Spain and produces films and TV shows. Its vice chairman, Pier Silvio Berlusconi, is the son of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who is also a media tycoon.

The company claims that on June 10, there were 4,643 video clips on YouTube, totalling more than 325 hours of material, owned by Mediaset. The company believes that as a result, its three Italian TV stations have lost 315,672 viewing days. The €500 million claim does not include the loss of advertising revenues from the shows.

YouTube is already grappling with a $1 billion copyright lawsuit by U.S. media giant Viacom, which similarly claims its content is offered on YouTube without permission.

YouTube has said its policy is to remove infringing clips if media owners complain.

Google officials were not immediately available for comment.
